India's Laapataa Ladies858 play, directed by Kiran Rao, is out of the Oscars 2025 race. The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences on Tuesday, December 17, announced 15 films that have been shortlisted under 10 categories for the next round. The shortlisted films will now be viewed and voted on by Academy members who will decide the final list of nominees for the 97th Academy Awards. 

Guneet Monga's live-action short film, Anuja, has been shortlisted and Shahana Goswami starrer Santosh, has made it to the International Feature Film category. Santosh is helmed by British-Indian director Sandhya Suri.

Santosh was selected as the United Kingdom’s official entry. It had its world premiere in the Un Certain Regard section at the 77th Cannes Film Festival this year. 

In September this year, Laapataa Ladies was announced as India’s official entry to the Oscars in the Best Foreign Language Film category. The announcement was made by the Film Federation of India committee led byfilmmaker Jahnu Barua. The Aamir Khan's production was selected from the list of 29 submitted films across various Indian languages, including Payal Kapadia’s All We Imagine as Light.
